Adopting a Cat: What to Know Before You Bring a Kitten Home

Cats are independent, clean and affectionate – but adopting a cat is also a long-term commitment, sometimes for 15–20 years. Here is what matters.

Kitten or adult cat?

Kittens are playful and adapt easily, but they need more time, attention and money in the first year (vaccinations, deworming, neutering). Adult cats have an established character – it is easy to see whether they are cuddly, vocal or calm. They often wait a long time in shelters even though they make wonderful companions.

How to choose

  • Watch how the cat reacts to people – is it curious or afraid?
  • Check that the eyes, nose and coat look healthy.
  • Ask about vaccinations, deworming and neutering.
  • Ask whether it is used to a litter tray and to other animals.

What to buy in advance

  • A litter tray and litter (use the same kind as the owner for the first days)
  • Food and water bowls, and the food the cat already eats
  • A scratching post, a bed or a box to hide in
  • A carrier for the journey home and for vet visits

The first week

Do not let the cat roam the whole home at once. Keep it in one room with food, water and a litter tray and give it a few days to settle. Speak softly and do not force it out of its hiding place. When it starts to explore, widen its territory gradually.

Safety

If you live on a high floor, fit nets on windows and balconies – falling from a window is one of the most common causes of injury in cats.
