How to Prepare Your Home for a Newly Adopted Pet: A Checklist
Good preparation makes the first days easier for you and for the animal. Use this checklist before you bring your pet home.
Safety
- Hide cables, medicines, cleaning products and small objects
- Remove toxic plants (for example lilies – dangerous for cats)
- Fit nets on windows and balconies
- Check the garden fence if you have one
What to buy
- Dog: collar or harness, lead, ID tag with your phone number, bed, bowl, chew toys
- Cat: litter tray, litter, scratching post, carrier, bowl
- Food – the same as the owner uses, switching gradually over 7–10 days
Agree the rules in advance
Decide as a family where the pet will sleep, whether it may go on the sofa, who walks it and who feeds it. Consistent rules help the animal find its bearings faster.
The first evening
Let the animal explore at its own pace. Do not overwhelm it with visitors and attention. Give it a warm, quiet place to sleep. It is normal for it to be frightened, not to eat on the first day or to hide.
What to avoid
- Punishment and shouting – harmful for an animal that has been through stress
- Leaving it alone for long on the very first day
- Letting it off the lead in an unfamiliar place
